PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Designed for faculty, researchers, research administrators, research development professionals, and all who are involved in developing or supporting grant proposals.
Cohort Description: The Grant Writing Certificate equips participants with skills and strategies to write stronger, more competitive grant proposals for any federal or non-federal funding agency. Through a combination of live instruction, practical examples and activities, and online practice, participants will gain an understanding of the grant writing process from initial idea development to proposal revision and review.
By the end of the certificate program, participants will have a deeper understanding of the grant writing process and a toolkit of practical strategies they can apply to their own proposals and to their work supporting faculty and research teams.

Time Commitment: 12 - 15 hours
A digital certificate will be awarded upon completion of the program.
COURSES
This course introduces participants to the stages of the grant writing process: prewriting, writing, and editing. Participants will explore strategies for planning and organizing their ideas, developing outlines and drafts, and editing their writing. This course is designed to help participants streamline their writing process and produce high-impact grant proposals. The strategies introduced in this course are applicable to any federal or non-federal funding agency.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Apply effective prewriting strategies to develop, organize, and refine ideas for grant proposals.
- Develop organized outlines that establish the structure and narrative of grant proposals.
- Apply strategies for outlining and drafting clear and well-structured proposal content.
- Use editing techniques to strengthen clarity and concision in grant writing.
- Implement an efficient, repeatable writing process.
This course introduces the essential components of competitive grant proposals, including their purpose and function. Participants will learn how proposal components work together to communicate clear and compelling project narratives. We will explore: one pager documents, overview and objectives, significance, innovation, approach, research plans, broader impacts, supporting documents, and more. This course emphasizes understanding how individual components work together to communicate a clear, compelling, and cohesive project narrative. The strategies introduced in this course are applicable to any federal or non-federal funding agency.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify essential components of grant proposals.
- Describe the purpose and function of grant proposal sections.
- Organize proposal components into a clear and cohesive narrative.
This course teaches participants strategies to write concisely and how to cut clutter. We will cover techniques for writing in the active voice, avoiding nominalizations (converting verbs into nouns), selecting strong verbs, and ensuring sentences convey their main action. Participants will leave with the skills to craft concise proposals and identify clutter in their writing. The strategies introduced in this course are applicable to any federal or non-federal funding agency.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the importance of concise writing in grant proposals.
- Understand the importance of using strong, active verbs in grant proposals.
- Learn techniques to identify and remove clutter from your writing.
- Explore examples of successful grant proposals to illustrate key concepts.
This class teaches participants how to develop focused and organized paragraphs through the effective use of punctuation and parallelism. You will learn how to vary sentence structures, craft strong paragraphs, and use punctuation to improve clarity and impact in your writing. We will also explore techniques that make grant proposals more compelling and precise. The strategies introduced in this course are applicable to any federal or non-federal funding agency.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

- Understand the importance of crafting strong, coherent paragraphs.

Strong grant proposals are written with the reviewer in mind. This course introduces participants to strategies for critically evaluating and editing grant proposals. Participants will examine proposals for clarity, organization, alignment, and persuasiveness, with particular attention to identifying gaps, inconsistencies, unsupported claims, and areas that may raise reviewer concerns. Through structured review, examples, and editing exercises, participants will develop techniques for writing and making revisions that strengthen the overall proposal.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Evaluate grant proposals from the perspective of a reviewer.
- Identify gaps and inconsistencies in grant proposals.
- Apply editing strategies to improve the clarity, organization, and persuasiveness of proposal narratives.
